GFM: I think that horror by its nature forces us to be in close contact with things that we find uncomfortable. SN: How do you think horror as a genre, and this book specifically, can be a tool for social critique, especially around the policing of gender and bodies? I just wanted to show them how I saw them, which is as a hero. I think Robbie is the most straightforward, and he’s just a synthesis of all the trans men who have taken care of me and loved me and who I’ve loved, and who have really protected me when I needed it. She also comes from not a lot of money, like I do, and sort of deflects the hurt around her appearance and her place in the world with wisecracks and by pursuing people who she knows don’t really value her. And then Beth, who’s big and obvious and can’t pass, is much more true to my experience of life, to the reality that I have to navigate every day. But when you’re born with money and looks, intention only goes so far. I like Fran - I think that she is largely a relatable and well-intentioned person.
